JULY 2022

Athena was named as a Northern California Super Lawyer for 2022.  She has been named a Northern California Super Lawyer every year since 2011.

MARCH 2022

Athena won a published decision for her client in Adoption of E.B. (2022) 6 Cal.App.5th 359, giving her client the opportunity to become a child’s third parent.  You can read the decision here.

AUGUST 2020

Sacramento Magazine profiled Athena as one of the Top Lawyers in Sacramento for Appellate law.

JULY 2020

Athena was selected as one of the Top 50 Women Northern California Super Lawyers and Top 25 Sacramento Super Lawyers for 2020.

 

MAY 2020

Athena secured a victory on behalf of her client in a family law case, In re Marriage of Gutierrez.  The Second District published the decision, which addresses issues regarding the division of community property between spouses and spouses’ fiduciary duties during divorce proceedings.  You can read the decision here.

NOVEMBER 2019

Athena won another victory for an appellant in a family court case, Marriage of Beasley.  The Third District Court of Appeal reversed the family court’s decision to vacate spousal support arrears that were owed, holding that the family court did not have authority to do so.  You can read the decision here.

SEPTEMBER 2019

Athena Roussos is pleased to announce three significant victories for her clients during the summer of 2019:

People v. Washington, Fifth DCA, Case No. F074558, June 24, 2019 – the Fifth District Court of Appeal, in a 2-1 decision, reversed Mr. Washington’s felony conviction for arson.  The Court held that the trial court erroneously admitted evidence of uncharged criminal acts and the error was prejudicial.  You can read the decision here.

Orozco v. Wilhoite, Third DCA, Case No. C086014, Aug. 16, 2019 – the Third District Court of Appeal reversed a child support order for below-guideline support, finding that the father, a professional football player, failed to show that the child’s needs would be met by a lower support amount.  The Court directed the trial court to order the father to pay guideline child support.  You can read the decision here.

Moore v. Wells Fargo, Third DCA, Case No. C082231, Aug. 28, 2019 – in a partially published opinion, the Third District Court of Appeal reversed a judgment for Wells Fargo Bank and reinstated a jury verdict finding that Wells Fargo committed fraud against the plaintiff, Gregory Moore.  The Court of Appeal also reversed other rulings of the trial court and ordered a new trial on a number of different claims against Wells Fargo.  You can read the decision here.

MAY 2019

The Third District Court of Appeal issued a “Palma” letter in D.A. v. Superior Court after Athena Roussos filed a petition for writ of mandate when her client, D.A., was denied a fee waiver for certain court-ordered investigation fees in connection with her petition to adopt her grandchild.  Legal Services of Northern California also submitted an amicus letter in support of the writ petition.  After the Palma letter was issued, the Sacramento County Superior Court agreed to waive the fees, allowing the adoption case to proceed.  You can see the Court of Appeal docket here.

AUGUST 2018

Athena Roussos was voted as Vice Chair of the Appellate Section of the Sacramento County Bar Association in August 2017.

Athena Roussos was a presenter at Pincus Professional Education’s Exam Prep:  CA Appellate Law Specialist Exam (Civil) on August 9 and 10, 2017 in Los Angeles.

Athena Roussos spoke to the Sacramento County Bar Association Family Law Section along with Jay-Allen Eisen on March 1, 2016. The topic was “An Appealing Way to Practice Law”.

JANUARY 2016

Athena Roussos is very proud to announce her selection to the California Academy of Appellate Lawyers. The Academy is the nation’s oldest lawyers’ organization dedicated to appellate practice. Members are elected to membership after rigorous scrutiny of their skill in advocacy before the appellate courts. Members must have been a member of the California Bar for at least 10 years, been lead counsel in at least 25 appeals or writ proceedings, and orally argued at least 15 appeals or writs. Athena is extremely honored to be part of this prestigious organization.
